Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park is a 209,644-acre area mostly kept wild. It was founded by Percival P. Baxter when he purchased 6,000 acres in 1930. The park is easy to access from the nearby town of Millinocket, where you'll find the Baxter State Park Headquarters. Your Jeep adventure starts when you leave Stanford, ME, and head north on I-95. The three-and-a-half-hour journey takes you past many of Maine's smaller towns, with plenty to offer along the way. Once at Baxter State Park, there is plenty to do, from hiking and camping to hunting and fishing. Or simply do what Jeep vehicle owners do best: enjoy your vehicle exploring local trails and back roads.

Bold Coast Scenic Byway

Starting in Milbridge and continuing up Maines's rugged coast to Eastport, this iconic byway takes you on an adventure at every mile. Along the 125-mile drive, you can explore Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge, Cobscook Bay State Park, and Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge. While on your expedition, you can see Ruggles House Museum and tour an 1820s federal-style house or Fort O'Brien State Historic Site, a fort destroyed and rebuilt three times in its 90 years of use through the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Start this adventure by heading to any of the towns along US-1 and let your heart guide you which way to turn from there. You can stop at a state park to hike or explore back roads to find other hidden gems further off the beaten path. Next time you want to get out of Kennebunk in your Jeep Grand Cherokee, this is a great trip to consider.

Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway

With amazing mountain views and meandering waterways along this breathtaking byway, you will surely find adventure. You can find everything from places to whitewater-raft, snowmobile, and fish to spots to enjoy the sounds of nature to quiet towns and relaxing breweries. From southern Maine, take I-95 to US-201 and stay on that for about 25 miles. After that, adventure awaits. Once you're in the area, thousands of logging roads permit public use. While these primitive roads are a great place to put your Jeep Wrangler through its paces, remember that logging trucks have the right-of-way, and all other road rules apply. So take a long weekend from Scarborough, ME, and explore Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway.

Moosehead Lake Scenic Byway

The closest you'll come to a traffic jam on this beautiful byway is the occasional moose crossing the road. The route follows Route 15 from Jackman to Greenville and onto Kokadjo. This 59-mile drive takes you through some of Maine's most beautiful lakes and rivers. You can find plenty of places to hike or ski along the way. If you have access to a kayak or canoe, a day trip on the waters of Moosehead Lake or any of the rivers in the area. While the road and outlying trails are rather remote, often lacking cell reception, there are plenty of spots of civilization along the way, so camping isn't your only option to make a weekend out of this drive in your Jeep Grand Cherokee. So make some plans and head up from York, ME, to start your next adventure.
